'BOSPHORUS UNIVERSITY' SHIELD AGAINST CYBER-ATTACKS

The Center for Cyber Security Studies in Management Information Systems, established within Boğaziçi University, will identify the cyber vulnerabilities of municipalities, state hospitals and universities that will make a request and ensure the security of these institutions against possible attacks.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgin Metin, a faculty member of the Department of Management Information Systems, who teaches information security courses at Boğaziçi University, concretized his academic knowledge by establishing the Center for Cyber Security Studies.

Metin stated that their project titled “Center for Cyber Security Studies in Management Information Systems”, which they applied to the Istanbul Development Agency's Innovative Istanbul Financial Support Program, was included in the scope of support, and said that a Cyber Penetration Test and Forensic Informatics Laboratory will be established within this framework.

“Istanbul Cyber Security Emergency Action Plan”

Explaining that they also defined the “Istanbul Cyber Security Emergency Action Plan” within the scope of the project, Metin said:

"Within this framework, agreements will be signed with municipalities, state hospitals and state universities, which cannot allocate the resources they desire for cyber security, but undertake important tasks as a function and serve a very wide audience, within the quota according to the order of application. Information technology managers will receive internationally recognized information security management training. Thus, institutions will be enabled to manage their cyber security with better quality. Cyber vulnerability tests will be conducted on the websites of institutions and organizations that make an agreement with the Center and contribute to the urgent improvement of cyber security weaknesses."

Cyber security camp for related students

Metin said that they would like to organize cyber security camps for interested students, and that the first camp will be held on January 16-20, 2017. (For applications, see http://www.siber.boun.edu.tr/siberguc.html) Touching on the importance of cyber intelligence and affiliates within this framework, Metin said: "Even if you have the most talented and competent cyber security personnel in your organization, they may be insufficient against today's advanced attacks. Therefore, it is a must to be in contact with cyber intelligence centers around the world."

Stating that a company with centers in London, Japan, Canada and India is taking part in the project as an associate in the fields of cyber intelligence and penetration tests, Metin said:

"The Turkish Standards Institute is also taking part in our project as a participant in information security management and business continuity management. Although not a participant in the project, a company is also cooperating with us on penetration tests within the framework of the free cyber security camp. In this context, we can say that we are trying to realize university-industry cooperation through the project. In addition, since we serve within the “Bogaziçi University Information Systems Research Center”, research and development activities on cyber security are among our future goals.

The Center, which was opened within Boğaziçi University, will provide one-time free of charge service to the relevant institutions applying to be included in the project throughout the country within the quota. Other institutions that apply will be able to receive services for a reasonable fee.
